Gummy Smile Surgery Crown Lengthening in Coral Gables, FL

A lot of our patients can be very self-conscious about their smiles. While people often think of all of the dental work that they can do to correct a variety of dental issues, they may be at a loss when they have what is called a “gummy smile.” However, at Gables Perfect Smile, we can help with a wide variety of issues, including correcting a smile that is hiding too much of your beautiful teeth.

What is a Gummy Smile?

Gummy smiles are seen when the gums attach too far down the crown of the tooth. This makes the teeth look too short or stunted and can create some apprehension and stress for our patients. Additionally, many patients often feel that there is a problem with their teeth, and that is why they have too much gum. Fortunately, the underlying teeth are often in great condition, so just making them visible has a dramatic effect on the quality of your smile. Additionally, because the underlying tooth is already in great condition, it means that the procedure is simpler and you get faster results.

Taking the First Step

The entire procedure to eliminate a gummy smile is pretty straightforward. However, as with any medical practice, there are certain things that we need to do before we just begin with a medical procedure. The first thing you should do is call Gables Perfect Smile today and schedule your appointment. You may also just bring it up the next time that you come in for your regular dental checkup. We want to evaluate your medical and family history and make sure that you are a good candidate for this procedure.

Any oral procedure that we complete has the potential to spread an existing infection, so we want to do everything possible to make sure that you stay healthy. If there is some infection or other issues, we will likely prescribe an antibiotic before your appointment to increase the success of your operation.

The Process

Once we have reviewed your history and determined that this surgery is a good fit for you, we get you scheduled. Once you come in on your scheduled date, we will make sure that your gums are properly numbed. This is done with the use of a local anesthetic, so you will be awake and responsive throughout the procedure. Once the gums have been numbed, we can cut back the excess gum material from your teeth to expose more of the crown and give you a whiter, brighter smile. While cutting away the excess tissue, we will also shape the gums to give you a natural appearance.

Once the gums have been correctly trimmed back, several small sutures will be made to help

close the incisions and hold the gums in place so they can naturally attach to the tooth in the proper location. These stitches will be in place for about a week before they can be removed. Once the stitches are placed, you can be released to go home.

After Care

Once your return home, we will send you with some information about the surgery, how to care for yourself, and what you should do if something unexpected happens. One of the biggest pieces of advice that we give is to brush carefully in the days following the procedure. It is important to keep the gums clean during this time, but you should also be careful to not brush too hard along the gum line.
